Applied Theatre
Carson believes in the power of performance art to build empathetic communities, to celebrate diverse stories, and to create sustainable social change.
In addition to earning a BFA in Acting, Carson focused her time at Coastal Carolina University (CCU) as a professional researcher and applied theatre artist. She was a facilitator for CCU’s Inclusive Theatre Group, an ensemble in which disabled, able-bodied, and neurodivergent community members and CCU students developed theatre together for all four years of college and conducted focused research on disability justice in theatre. She presented her research alongside Amanda Masterpaul, her mentor, at the 2021 ABLE Assembly Conference.
Carson has also co-devised applied theatre performances centering youth houselessness and interpersonal violence at CCU, and she worked with CCU's LIFE Program as a one-on-one tutor for students experiencing down syndrome and autism. Most recently she facilitated a program and showcase with the Thrive Upstate Head and Spinal Chord Injury Center with the Warehouse Theatre.
